The new restaurant, Dux Dine, is a grown up version of Dux de Lux. It is located in a gorgeously renovated old villa on Riccarton Road, just passed the railway line. It looked a bit small on the outside, but once entered, it was a different story. The old villa was transformed into a modern home with bold and funky colours, decorations, and furniture Many of the interior walls were removed to create an open space, and I hope they kept all the important ones! This made the place look bigger and quite inviting.
Attached to the villa, was a large sun room, undercover but with plenty of sun. The large courtyard housed many tables, most with large umbrellas, so the diners can happily rest in the shade without melting. As it was a warm sunny day, most people were either outside or in the sun room. WM and I managed to get a table outside in the shade. While waiting for our food, we got to admire the well maintained little garden, complete with cute hanging flower baskets.
We started with drinks, and I had a flat white. Dux Dine uses coffee beans from Switch Espresso, the Christchurch coffee maker behind Black Betty. I always enjoyed coffees made with their beans, and the flat white here did not disappoint. It was smooth, rich, and fragrant. I also loved the colour of the cups, refreshing and unique. My coffee came with a mini biscotti. The biscotti was an absolute delight. It was light, crispy, and delicious. Both WM and I were impressed with it, and leaving us wanting more!
For the food, Dux Dine retained its old style, and serves only vegetarian or seafood dishes. I read somewhere this is called "Aquatarian", not quite sure if I like the term. But I love seafood, so was pleased to have so many to choose from. There were also many gluten free, dairy free, and vegan options. Plus a selection of pizzas, good for sharing.
WM had the fish of the day ($29), a popular choice among the diners. There were 3 options of crusts - baked lime and coriander; pan fried garlic, lemon, and herbs; or cajun spiced. WM went with the first option. The dish also came with polenta fries, fresh salad, and aioli. Neither of us could remember what the fish was, but whatever it was, it was very fresh! Lovely fresh fish fillet with a citrus and herb crust - perfect! The polenta fries were also very nice, and a good alternative from the normal fries.
I had the caesar salad ($17), Dux Dine style. Cos lettuce tossed with smoked salmon, garlic croutons, soft poached egg, shredded parmesan, and creamy caesar dressing. This was a variation from the classic caesar salad, which usually comes with bacon and/or chicken. I was very happy with my choice. This seemed to be a nice healthy option with lots of greens. The smoked salmon was delicious, and worked well in a caesar salad.
WM and I both enjoyed our lunch at Dux Dine. It was a lovely setting, with great atmosphere and friendly staff. It also helped that the food was delicious. I would love to come back, and would be keen to try their breakfast or pizza the next time.
