JC's Place

There are a large number of Chinese restaurants in Christchurch.  Some are good, and some are less desirable.  JC's Place is a well liked restaurant by many of my Asian friends.  It has a good selection of decent Chinese food at reasonable price, and friendly service.

Beef tendon with green beans

Our first dish was beef tendon with green beans in VSOP (a brandy) sauce.  I enjoyed the beef tendon which was well cooked and the texture was more melt-in-the-mouth rather than chewy.   The green beans provided the extra crunch and green for this dish.

Sizzling tofu

The sizzling tofu came in a hot plate, with mildly spicy pork mince sauce and omelette egg base.  The tofu was soft on the inside and full of flavour.  Definitely goes well with rice.  I could probably eat a plate of this with rice on its own.

Sizzling venison

Venison can often be overcooked and be a bit tough.  This sizzling plate venison with black pepper was however nice and tender, and provided a good alternative to beef.

VSOP lamb stir-fry

I'm not a big fan of lamb, but for the sake of the blog, I actually had a bit of the lamb stir-fry with VSOP sauce.  Again, like the venison, the meat was tender, and free of the funny smell/taste often associated with lamb.  I thought it was tasty, but I'm still not a convert!

Taro pork

I have had some horrible taro pork before, but fortunately this one was done well.  The taro was actually cooked (which many restaurants have problems with) and the nature sweetness of the taro came through well.  The pork was pre-marinated and the flavours compliment the taro well.  A nice little dish.

Overall, I enjoyed my meal at JC's.  It's probably not one of the top Chinese restaurants in Christchurch, but it does have decent food.  Unfortunately I do not know the cost of this dinner as my kind friend bought us all dinner.  But from memory, the price is usually quite reasonable.

Update:  JC's Place had closed since this post.
