Crumpet Club

Finally got a chance to visit the Crumpet Club.  I have heard nice things about this place.  Its by the same people as Le Bon Bolli, the award winning French restaurant which closed its doors a couple of years ago, so they can focus on a catering business.

My previous experience with crumpet (the supermarket bought ones) has not been pleasant.  So I was unsure how this would turn out.  However, as I was promised freshly baked crumpet, I was ready to give it a chance.

As I had been on nights, I had to order a decaf latte.  It was unfortunately quite bitter.  I'm not sure whether it's just the decaf that made it taste bad.  Will have to try a regular coffee the next time I visit to compare.

Mushrooms, tomato, and gruyere cheese on savoury crumpet

I was impressed with the look of my friend's breakfast.  It came with field mushrooms, tomato, gruyere cheese melt on fresh savoury crumpet scented with truffle oil ($17.50).  I got to steal some of her mushrooms which were meaty and went well with the gruyere cheese which had a hint of sweetness.  The gruyere was slightly strong for me, so if you are not a fan of strong cheese, then this might not be for you.

French toast crumpet with extra bacon

I got the french toast crumpet ($14.50) with grilled banana, cinnamon, yoghurt and apple syrup.  For some reason, it doesn't come with bacon!  Fortunately I got to add bacon (for $5.00) to the dish, and I'm sure I wouldn't have been the first one to do that!  I enjoyed my dish, and have now decided I do like crumpet, especially when they came fresh like this.  My bacon was the thick, less crispy kind, which I like, and has a sweetness which went well with the rest of the dish.  The grilled banana and apple syrup were also very tasty. A nice treat during a set of nights!

The above photo is the view from the second floor balcony looking down.  I liked the relax atmosphere of the place.  The second floor even had cubicles with couches with an initimate group meal.  The service was reasonable.  They also have a few interesting dishes on the menu for lunch and dessert, but that will be for another time!
It is open for breakfast, brunch, and lunch.  Features in the Entertainment Book with 25% off the total bill, up to $25.

Update:  Unfortunately Crumpet Club had closed following the Christchurch earthquakes.
