Sydney - Sydney Fish Market

As many of you would have know, I am a big fan of Sydney food, and have taken special trips there for food (and shopping, of course!!).  Therefore, I thought it was fitting to do some posts on Sydney food.  I am starting with the Sydney Fish Market.  This is a must for seafood lovers!  It is located in Pyrmont, near Darling Harbour, and within 5-10 minutes walk from the Harbourtown Shopping Centre.

There is a great selection of fresh seafood, both for taking home to cook and for eating in.  There is also a deli selling cheese, pasta, special sauces, and ice cream.  A bread shop and a fruit and veggie shop.  Wine is also available for purchase, so you can pretty much get a whole fancy lunch sorted.

I had been there on 4 occasions during 2 visits to Sydney.  Two lunches and two brunches.

Fresh oysters

The fresh oysters were freshly shucked and available in half a dozen or a dozen.  I know many people aren't sure about oysters, but eaten fresh with nothing but freshly squeezed lemon juice, these oysters are soft, sweet, and simply gorgeous!

Tuna sashimi

Another must is the tuna sashimi.  There are "sushi bars" where you get to choose your own piece of tuna and the shop assistance would cut them into sashimi-appropriate size.  Packets of wasabi and soy sauce are available for purchase at 20c each.  The fresh tuna were sweet, melt-in-your-mouth, and irresistable!

Fresh scallops

Another sweet and melt-in-your-mouth example was the fresh scallops.  Also great with wasabi and soy sauce.

Tuna sashimi and sea urchin
During one of my visits, we had tuna sashimi (again!) and sea urchin.  Sea urchin (or kina, in NZ) is a delicacy, particularly loved in Asia and quite pricey there.  A small slice is usually served in a Japanese restaurant on top of a ball of rice with piece of dry seaweed.  We bought some rice ($1 from the Chinese shop) to go with this plate.

Abalone, scallops, and tuna
On another visit, we had fresh sashimi of abalone, scallops, and tuna.  This was breakfast!

Deep fried tiger prawns
One of the many stalls in the Sydney Fish Market sells cooked fresh seafood with many options to choose from.  We tried the deep fried tiger prawns with salt and pepper.  This was juicy and crispy, and the salt and pepper was perfect with just the right amount of spiciness!  Mmm, I could have eaten more of this!

Stir fry scallops

We also had some stir fry scallops which were also nice, although I preferred the fresh ones.

Stir fry prawns

There was a Chinese shop that cooks your purchase in a sauce of your choosing for $10.  We had garlic and ginger prawns which were lovely, although we struggled to finish all the food by the end.

Lobster mornay with chips and salad

During my first visit, I tried the lobster mornay which came with chips and salad.  The lobster was great, meaty and fresh, although I would have preferred a lighter sauce.

Blue crabs

There were many stalls selling freshing seafood for taking home and doing your own cooking.  You also get to catch your own fresh crab or lobster if you wish!  I'm not sure if I would be that brave!

The sashimi bar was great with helpful staff.  Grilled eel is also available.

I love the Sydney Fish Market, and would recommend it to anyone visiting Sydney!  It is a very popular place, especially on weekends, and it can often be difficult to get a table.  We also found lots of tissues and wet wipes helpful, as we really had to use our hands to eat these properly!

A word of warning, make sure you go with your stomach empty!  You don't want the regret of not able to try more of these delicious seafood!
